8 – 13 Year Olds Can Win $1,000

OneUnited essay contest

Kids are learning every day. Alongside reading, writing, and arithmetic it’s important that children learn about money and financial management. OneUnited Bank and the BMe Community are giving kids a gentle nudge in that direction. This summer, kids between 8 and 12 years old have the opportunity win $1,000 savings account by writing or drawing about a financial education concept they learned from the book, “I Got Bank!” or another financial education book.

From the website:

OneUnited Bank and BMe Community are sponsoring the seventh annual financial literacy contest for youth between the ages of 8 – 12 years old. Simply either write and submit a 250 word essay or create and submit an art project about what you learned from the book “I Got Bank!” (or from another financial literacy book available in your library or home) and how you can use what you learned in your life or the life of your family.

You must have your parents’ permission to participate. Your essay or art project may be published by OneUnited Bank and BMe Community. All submissions must be postmarked or emailed by June 15, 2017. (Children of employees of OneUnited Bank or BMe Community are ineligible to participate.) Winners will be selected by OneUnited Bank in our sole discretion. Ten (10) winners will receive a $1,000 savings account by August 31, 2017 (with cooperation from parents). One winner will be selected from each of the following eight cities (Akron, Baltimore, Boston, Detroit, Los Angeles, Miami, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh) and two will be selected from other locations in the U.S

Winners will be announced by August 31, 2017.

The deadline is June 15th so make sure to visit the OneUnited website and get your entry in before then.

Quick Facts for Latinas About 401(k)s on Mamiverse.com

My latest article on Mamiverse.com is below. Women of all ethnicities need to read this article. Too many of us are putting money into our 401ks and are not sure exactly what’s happening to the money we contribute or what to do with it once we leave jobs. Read the whole article on Mamiverse.com.

A new study from the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that most Latinas will live an average of 83 years. That’s great news until you start thinking about how you’ll live once you stop working. According to the Ariel/Aon Hewitt  Study 2012, Hispanics have considerably less—35% less—money invested than Asian-Americans and Whites. I’ve heard Latinas tell me that the number one reason they don’t actively invest for retirement is that they don’t understandhow to do it.

So, here are a few quick facts about the most common way to invest—with your company’s 401(k) plan.

WHAT THEY ARE
A 401(k) is a retirement planning option that, at most jobs, has taken the place of pensions. The role of a 401(k) is to invest your money (or “contribution”) in the stock market in hopes that you’ll have enough money to retire on when the time comes.

Helping Kids in Care Succeed

Reading about kids aging out of foster care makes me sick. Literally. I aged out at 17 and I didn’t realize that the crappy education and skill set that I had was so much more than many of the other kids received. I wrote this book because I want to help the kids that are still n care have access to as much information as I can.

Order copies for your case load, kids in your group home, and kids in your school.

Everything from finding an apartment and getting the utilities turned on to paying for college and saving for retirement are covered. Resources for emancipating youth shared from organizations across the country are also included. This edition includes a bonus chapter on resumes, interviewing, and career advice.

Shay spoke at a financial education event for kids in care hosted by New York ACS. You care hire Shay to speak at your event as well.
Click the photo to visit Shay’s speaking website.

We have to start preparing kids in care to take care of themselves. The statistics are too sad. There is no reason that:

Outcomes during transition from care to adulthood National data Regional or Local data
Earned a high school diploma 54% 50% – 63%
Obtained a Bachelor’s degree or higher 2% 2%
Became a parent 84% 42%
Were unemployed 51% 30%
Had no health insurance 30% 29%
Had been homeless 25% 36%
Were receiving public assistance 30% 26%

From Foster Care  Alumni

These numbers are unacceptable. We have to do something to help.

Baldwin Park Students Finish in Top 20% Nationwide

A southern California credit union. A great place to have a relationship. Click the photo to visit the SCE website.

As you know, Shay Olivarria, has had a mutually beneficial relationship with the SCE Federal Credit Union Foundation for years, so you can imagine how happy she is to learn that 10 the students at Baldwin Park High School have finished in the top 20% of all the students that took the national financial education challenge!

In 2011, 52 public schools in California competed in the competition and posted scores below the national average, which can be attributed to California high school students not being required to take a financial literacy course in order to graduate.

Baldwin Park High School, which offers a financial literacy program with the help of SCE FCU’s Foundation, had 10 students finish in the Challenge’s top 20 percent nationally in 2011.

“Through the SCE FCU Foundation, teenagers are forming healthy money management skills,” says SCE FCU CEO Dennis Huber. “In 2011, we were able to help nearly 4,000 individuals with financial educational programs. Our foundation is an extension of the credit union movement – people helping people.”

Last year, SCE FCU partnered with Boyle Heights Technology Center and Watts Youth Opportunity Movement, two non-profits running a special youth workforce program for 14-21 year olds, to educate them on smart money management skills. More than 140 participants opened a special savings and checking account, which SCE FCU designed with safeguards to avoid overdraft fees as students learn to use their account.

Congrats to all the students!

Here’s to another banner year with SCE Federal Credit Union Foundation!

Here’s to making a difference every day with students across the country!
